HBO Max Premium is the top tier of Warner Bros. Discovery's streaming service, and in the US it costs $22.99 a month or $229.99 a year as of October 2026. That is the plan with 4K, Dolby Atmos and four screens at once, and it is the most expensive way to watch HBO.

A note on the name
The service has changed names twice. It launched as HBO Max, became "Max" in 2023, and is now HBO Max again. The official site at hbomax.com uses HBO Max throughout, and that is the name used here. If you still have the Max app installed, it is the same service.

The library is the same on every tier: HBO series, Warner Bros. films and the rest of the catalogue. What you pay extra for on Premium is picture quality, audio, the number of screens and the download allowance.

Paying yearly saves about 16% against twelve monthly payments, by HBO Max's own figures. Even so, a year of Premium is $229.99 before tax. Prices outside the US are set country by country, and the product description on our side says the discount comes from regional pricing.

Premium, 12 months
One payment of €70 covers a year of the Premium tier, so you get the 4K, Atmos, four-stream plan rather than one of the cheaper tiers. There is no monthly charge and nothing renews by itself.
The one requirement on the product page is that you provide a fresh email address that has never been registered with HBO Max. At checkout you enter that email and a password for the account. Premium runs on that login for the 12 months.
What the fresh email means
This is the main trade-off:
- Your current HBO Max account doesn't carry over. Watch history, profiles and "My List" from an older account stay on that account. You start clean on the new one.
- Any email you have used with HBO Max before won't work. That includes an address you signed up with years ago under the old HBO Max or Max name. If in doubt, use a new address.
- You need access to that inbox. Use an address you control and will keep for the whole year, since that is where sign-in and account messages will go.
If you are a current HBO Max subscriber, cancel your existing plan so you are not paying twice. Your old account can sit unused alongside the new one.
Who this suits
- You watch on a 4K TV. Premium is the only HBO Max tier with 4K and Atmos, and those are what you pay extra for.
- Several people watch at different times. Four simultaneous streams cover most households, though sport is capped at two.
- You don't mind starting a new account. If your watch history matters a lot to you, the fresh-email requirement is the cost of the lower price.
- You only watch on a phone or laptop. Premium still works, but most of its extra value is on a big screen.
